EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF ACADEMIC COUNCIL

SPECIAL MEETING

MINUTES

November 22, 2004

Present: Abeles, Harrow, Larabee, Nair, Ogundimu, Schechter, Sticklen, Dick Weber; Others: Banks, Wright

Absent: McCoy, Melnick, Morash, Newman, Prasad, Probst, Dan Weber, Wei

Chairperson Sticklen called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. with a quorum being present.

The agenda was approved as distributed.

Provost’s Comments:
Professor Banks represented the Provost for this meeting. Professor Banks had no comments.

Chairperson’s Remarks:
Professor Sticklen, Chairperson, noted that the Provost’s response to the CCR had not been received as of this time.

New Residential College:
The New Residential College Report was referred to UCAP, UGC and UCSA for consultation. The three Standing Committees responded back to ECAC. Please see attached for details.

Professor Sticklen noted there was no dissent among the three committees. The meeting of Academic Council November 23, 2004 will address the New Residential College issue. A draft motion was framed by an ECAC member that supports the concept of the New Residential College with caveats. There was discussion on the pros and cons of the Committee framing and presenting a motion to Council. The important question that needs to be answered is: Is there support for the concept of the New Residential College? There continues to be many discussions regarding the clarity of the New Residential College. The College of Arts and Letters advisory Council will be sending their commentary to the Provost. Professor Banks noted the calendar does allow some flexibility and an Academic Council meeting could be scheduled for December 7, 2004 providing more time before the New Residential College is on the AC agenda. A motion was passed to schedule an Academic Council meeting for December 7, 2004 and defer discussion of the New Residential College until the meeting. The members also agreed to revise the framed motion on the Residential College.

Committee on College Reorganization:
The Provost’s response to the CCR has not been received by ECAC at this time. It was suggested that the committee make referrals to the various Standing Committees now and send when the materials are all received. A decision was reached to defer referrals to Standing Committees in January.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 6:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Secretary for Academic Governance
