Conversation with Vice President Joanna Young, Chief Information Officer

Joanna Young , Vice President and Chief Information Officer of IT services at MSU, and Rob McCurdy, Director of Information, Technical Security and Messaging at MSU, presented on IT security at MSU.  She is new to the University for six months and is in listening, learning, dialogue and engagement mode.  Vice President Young presented her perspectives on the role of IT in the success of MSU.  She emphasized customer first mentality, eliminating the IT fragmentation, and an atmosphere of accountability.  The Deloitte Consulting LLC on campus is doing a full evaluation of IT services across campus.  A major area of discussion is the cost efficiency of the wide variety of IT that exist among the many units on campus.  In addition, there is a focus on keeping the technology up and running as we conduct the evaluation of the total IT operation.

VP Young also discussed her action plans for the future regarding the University wide email system.  Every aspect of the different email systems being used on campus goes through msu.edu mail service.  This system is out of date and campus will be moving to Microsoft 365 in the fall starting with incoming freshmen class.  Additionally, there is a focus on updating MSU storage capacity, the Wi-Fi environment and our ability to increase our access and utility in both areas.  The current Student Information Systems was built in the 1980’s and is a fragile system by today’s standard.  The upgrading of this system is difficult and will require a concentrated effort.

Rob McCurdy, Director of Information, Technical Security and Messaging at MSU discussed the role out of the two factor authentication process for the EBS functions.  The webpage for information about the process is secureIT.msu.edu.  There will a mobile application that will allow you interact with the system as well as the ability to interact with phone contacts.  Note: MSU blocks about 75 million spam emails per month.  Need to balance spam blocking without inference with the business of the University.

The meeting adjourned at 4:08 p.m.
