The Minutes for October 21, 2014 were approved as distributed.
President’s Remarks
The President was on her way back from Rome from a jointly sponsored Conference between MSU and the Food and Agriculture Association of the United Nations. She sent her regrets.
Provost’s Remarks
Provost Youatt announced the annual State of the University Address by the President will occur as a prelude to the annual Awards Convocation on February 10 in the Passant Theatre, Wharton Center. The program recognizes distinguished faculty and graduate students in the areas of teaching and learning, research, outreach and leadership.
Business Leaders for Michigan (http://www.businessleadersformichigan.com) has been highly supportive of higher education and recently produced a report on the importance of higher education for expanding economic growth and prosperity in the state of Michigan, including a set of recommendations. The BLM has been an important advocate for higher education.
The Steering Committee Chairperson’s Remarks
Professor Moriarty commented on the importance of faculty attendance at the Awards Convocation February 10.
Presentation on Payroll Debit Cards
Provost Youatt invited Mark P. Haas, Vice President for Finance and Treasurer, to give a presentation on the new Payroll Debit Card. The goal is to try to eliminate paper checks and increase security and convenience. Effective in August 2015, persons who do not have electronic payroll deposits will be required to obtain a Payroll Debit Visa Card from the MSU Federal Credit Union. Each month their checks will be deposited in the Visa account.
Athletic Council Annual Report and Presentation
Professor Sue Carter, Chairperson of the Athletic Council Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR) provided a discussion of the role of the Athletic Council and her position as FAR. Following her presentation, she introduced Jim Pignataro, Associate Athletic Director and Director of Student Athletic Support Services (SASS). He described many of the activities of SASS in supporting student athletes in their academic programs. The presentations were followed by a question and answer period.
New Business
Dr. Dickson from Education announced that Professor Moriarty had performed the previous evening for Mozart’s birthday and was terrific. When she was eleven years old, she made her debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Dickson also distributed flyers about how universities can respond to the growth of international students.
