Item 2021-44: Lessons Learned from Satisfactory / Not Satisfactory Grading

Provost Teresa K. Woodruff asked the University Committee on Undergraduate Education to consider the lessons learned from the implementation of Satisfactory / Not Satisfactory Grading and whether there is a place for S/NS in the post-pandemic academy.

UCUE formed a subcommittee consisting of Steve Shablin (Registrar), Rich Bellon (Lyman Briggs College), Jonelle Golding (APUE), and Helen Mayer (College of Veterinary Medicine) on March 25, 2021. The subcommittee discussed the issue on April 7, 2021, and its members reported that it was still gathering information at the April 8 UCUE meeting. On April 13, 2021, Provost Woodruff announced that S/NS grading would be offered in Spring Semester 2021 and Summer Semester 2021, with the latter being the last semester MSU expected to offer S/NS grading.

At the April 29, 2021 UCUE meeting, the subcommittee shared a report recommending that the drop date be examined and possibly moved later (maybe even as late as the end of the semester). UCUE approved the report and sent it to the provost on the same day.
